I don't get the whole Julian Assange thing

;
I'm not going to write about whether the Wikileaks thing was right or not... that just seems like too much of a can of worms and I have very mixed feelings about that. This is about the Swedish request to extradite Assange from teh UK to face rape charges, his subsequent holing up in the Ecuadorean embassy in London, and the legions of people crying "free Assange" all over the world.

Oh, this isn't about the rape charge either. Talking about how the criminal justice system deals with rape is a very very sensitive issue, and I'm not brave enough to go there. Let's simply say that when a country with an advanced judicial system wishes to question somebody about a crime they may have committed, I'm inclined to take that on face value.

The whole conspiracy theory doesn't add up for me. It's not that I trust the USA, and I certainly wouldn't if I were Julian Assange. If I were him, I would make sure I didn't set foot there for the rest of my life. I don't even totally discount the notion or the US being prepared to do something extrajudicial (abduction / assassination) in order to get their hands on him. So, let's assume the US were planning to get up to no good with respect to Assange. Do you think they would conspire with an advanced, liberal, uncorrupt European democracy with a strong independence streak to trump up a rape charge in order to extradite him there from another advanced European democracy? Do you really?

Extradition laws are pretty strict; the United States would not be able to extradite Julian Assange from Sweden without the UK's permission in addition to Sweden's. He would be there solely for the purpose of answering the rape charges. Once that matter is dealt with, he would have to return to the UK. And if the US were planning to go extrajudicial on him, wouldn't they do just as well to do so in the UK as in Sweden? Frankly, I doubt they would do that in Europe. Sure, Obama has a loose trigger finger when it comes to drone assassinations in Pakistan, but doing it on the turf of a powerful ally is something quite different.

Assange is a nuisance and an embarrassment to the United States, but in my opinion he is not a threat: he just publishes information sourced from other people (the real threat, as it were). No doubt the Americans would like to get rid of him if they could, but I doubt they would risk a major diplomatic incident to do so.

In my opinion, Julian Assange should man up, go to Sweden, and face the music. If he somehow ends up mysteriously disappeared or incarcerated in the USA, he'll be a martyr... which is kind of what he signed up for. I will certainly be very, very angry and join the demonstrations if that happens. In the meantime, it seems to me like Assange and his supporters are hiding behind conspiracy theories to avoid the unsavoury reality that he is wanted for something far more tawdry than trying to save the world.
