; Most developed countries have fairly strict legislation around noise pollution from motor vehicles. For the most part it works pretty well, and cars are much quieter than they used to be. It's not much of a problem to walk down a busy street and have a conversation with your companion.

Until, of course, a Harley Davidson motorcycle rolls by. Suddenly, with a sound like an angry dinosaur farting, your conversation is obliterated. Harley Davidsons often come in packs, too, in which case you're faced with a prolonged and even louder rumbling: as if all the dinosaurs of prehistory saw a meteorite coming to annihilate their species and farted in terror at once. Just what I need when I'm sipping a flat white at some hipster cafe.

Now, I did a little bit of research before writing this post, and some people claim that the loudness of Harley Davidsons comes from illegal after-market modifications to the exhaust systems. I don't know enough to comment about this, but I can say that I've never heard a Harley Davidson that wasn't loud enough to be completely antisocial. I don't think these bikes should be allowed to be sold, and certainly they shouldn't be allowed to be ridden in any residential areas, but if it is true that the Harley Davidsons in showrooms are actually well-muffled softly purring beasts, then the police in every country I've been to need to do a hell of a better job in cracking down on illegal modifications.

In Australia we have quite a lot of trouble with "bikie gangs," which are associations of organised criminals who also happen to like riding Harleys. Wouldn't it be nice, just as Al Capone went down for not paying his taxes, if these criminal gangs could be brought to heel for violating noise ordinances?
