This makes me mad
Some of the refugees have been in detention for four years. Some of them have children. All of them have experienced Bad Things. None of them have committed a crime in Australia. They do not have the right to know the full reasons for their adverse security assessment. They do not have the right to appeal the assessment. Under current government policy, there is no process that will lead to their release.
Kafkaesque, isn't it? Murderers have more rights than these refugees. Rapists have more rights. Paedophiles have more rights. These refugees are being locked up forever due to covert allegations of thought crimes. There is no possible interpretation under which this is something a civilised country would do. It seems to me that the current legal situation for these refugees is as bad or worse than the inmates of Guantanamo Bay.
What's unbelievable is that both sides of politics support the current policy of indefinite detention. There's a kind of competition on between the parties to see who's "tougher on illegal immigration" and this seems to mean that human rights go out the window; international conventions be damned.
Ah well, at least the economy's going OK.
